What is the Bible and Why Was it Given to the Church?
We already noted in week 2 that the Bible is used to show us what God is like, but further explanation is needed to talk about the Bible.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. (ESV)
Where does Scripture come from?
It is God breathed. While people wrote the words and put their style and personality into Scripture, God directed it.
Can we trust it?
Yes, because it is God breathed ALL Scripture is good.
Why should we read it?
Scripture shows us right from wrong so that we can do good works and be godly.
Why else do we need Scripture?
John 5:39-40 – You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. (ESV)
The Scriptures show us who God is and direct us to Jesus. This allows us to have eternal life.
Scripture Memory Verse:
2 Timothy 3:16 – All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teach, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.
What is the Bible and why was it given to the church?
The Bible is God’s trustworthy word given to reveal who he is and how we should live so that we can have eternal life.
