Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing. (rev. 5:13)
In the fifth chapter of Revelation we catch a brief glimpse of what heaven is going to be like. We see God, seated on a throne, surrounded by heavenly beings whose worship of the Almighty never ceases. Beyond the beings are angels and the saints, numbering “myriads upon myriads and thousands of thousands,” together singing one song of praise to “the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb.” From this brief glimpse we can be confident that our destiny as believers is to be united eternally in worship of God.
This reality fills me with great hope. In a day when so often what takes place in our churches can be described as worship “war” we can look forward to a future of unity. The very thing that divides us now will one day be the bond that unites us. The curse of Babel will one day be broken as the redeemed gather to sing a new song in chorus. The true worshipping community has one mind and one voice – not a monotone, but a perfect harmony.
The great Thomas Aquinas once wrote that “the highest delight rises from our being united with what fits us best.” We were created to worship, and when we truly worship we are both satisfied and unified. Today we honor a living saint among us who has devoted his entire life to leading God’s people to the throne of grace in thanksgiving, praise, and devotion. Thank you, Alden Winslow, for your example, witness, and godly service to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit who alone is “Holy, holy holy!”
